Terrazzo, homogeneous tile, and marble can all look similar underfoot — but they need genuinely different polishing approaches. Here's how to tell them apart.
Many older Singapore homes have floors that look marble-like at a glance but are actually terrazzo or homogeneous tile — each with a different composition and a different correct polishing approach. Treating one like the other can lead to disappointing results or unnecessary cost.
Here's how to identify what you actually have, and what changes in how it's cared for.
Terrazzo is a composite material — marble or granite chips set in cement or resin, then ground smooth. It has a distinctive speckled, aggregate look, common in older HDB corridors and some 1970s–90s flats.
Homogeneous tiles are manufactured, uniform tiles made from clay and minerals, fired at high temperature — the colour and pattern run through the entire tile thickness, unlike a surface-printed tile. They're extremely common in HDB kitchens and bathrooms.
Natural marble is quarried stone with genuine, non-repeating veining — look closely and you'll see the grain pattern is never perfectly symmetrical, unlike a manufactured tile's repeated pattern.
| Factor | Terrazzo | Homogeneous Tile | Natural Marble |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition | Stone chips in cement/resin | Manufactured, uniform | Natural quarried stone |
| Porosity | Moderate | Low – less staining risk | Higher, needs sealing |
| Repair after damage | Grind & re-polish | Often full tile replacement | Grind, hone, or re-polish |
| Typical polishing process | Diamond grinding + polish | Diamond polishing + re-grouting | Grinding, honing, crystallization |
Illustrative only — complexity depends on the specific floor's condition and desired finish, confirmed after an on-site assessment.
If you're not sure which of the three you have, a quick on-site look tells us immediately — the right polishing process depends entirely on getting this identification right first.
