Sengkang is one of Singapore's newest towns, with its first flats only completed in 1997 — so original parquet is far less common here than in older estates, but its waterside setting brings its own home care needs.
Sengkang doesn't fit the same pattern as older estates like Bedok or Toa Payoh. HDB only began developing it as a housing estate in the mid-1990s, with the first flats in Rivervale completed in 1997 — nearly 6,000 units built within a single year. By then, parquet was already being phased out in favour of other flooring standards across many new HDB developments.
That means original parquet is much rarer in Sengkang than in Singapore's older mature estates. What Sengkang homes do have plenty of is exposure to the two rivers the town is built around — which brings a different, very real home care need: insect protection.
Sengkang was conceptualised by a dedicated HDB planning team in 1994, built specifically around Sungei Serangoon and Sungei Punggol, giving the town its name — Sengkang roughly translates to "port with a plank bridge" — and its waterway-centric design.
Because construction began so much later than places like Bedok or Ang Mo Kio, most Sengkang flats were built with the flooring standards common from the late 1990s onward, which generally means less original parquet and more concrete screed or tiled finishes as a starting point.
What Sengkang does have is a lot of water and greenery by design — river frontage, ponds and parks throughout the town — which makes insect intrusion a much more common concern for residents here than in drier, more built-up estates.
