Bishan was built out as a new town in the 1980s, right as parquet remained the standard flooring for HDB bedrooms and living areas across Singapore.
Bishan is one of eleven new towns HDB developed during the 1980s, alongside Hougang and Jurong East. That decade sat squarely within the era when parquet tiles were laid as the default flooring finish in new HDB flats, before ceramic tiles and vinyl planks became more common from the 1990s onward.
Because Bishan's original blocks date almost entirely from this window, a large share of its older units still carry their original parquet — particularly flats that haven't changed hands since first being sold.
1980s new towns like Bishan were part of a wave of HDB developments designed with stronger community facilities and more distinctive architecture than earlier estates, but the interior flooring specification for bedrooms and living rooms stayed largely consistent with what had become standard practice: parquet.
As Bishan has matured into a well-established, centrally located estate, many original owners have stayed put, meaning the parquet laid during construction in the 1980s is often still the floor being walked on today, some 40-plus years later.
