Why Singapore's Humidity Causes Parquet Gapping and Cupping

Your parquet isn't just old — it's reacting to moisture, exactly the way wood is supposed to. Here's the building-science explanation, and what actually helps.

Gaps that open and close with the seasons, edges that curl slightly upward, boards that seem to have a gentle dome in the middle — these aren't signs of a badly made floor. They're wood behaving exactly as wood does: absorbing and releasing moisture from the air around it, and changing shape as it does.

Singapore's climate makes this more pronounced than almost anywhere else, because the swings between air-conditioned indoor air and outdoor tropical humidity happen constantly, every single day.

Why wood moves with humidity

Timber is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from humid air and releases it in drier conditions, expanding and contracting as it does. In Singapore, outdoor relative humidity regularly sits above 70–80%, while air-conditioned indoor spaces can drop closer to 50–60%. Every time your aircon cycles on and off, or a window is opened, the parquet is absorbing or releasing moisture in response.

  • Keep humidity reasonably stable rather than letting the aircon cycle on and off dramatically — consistency matters more than hitting an exact number.
  • Wipe up spills immediately, especially near kitchens, bathrooms, and balcony doors, where moisture exposure is highest.
  • Avoid wet mopping or steam cleaning — both introduce moisture directly into the seams between boards.
  • Don't sand a cupped floor while it's still damp — this is one of the most common causes of crowning, where the floor overcorrects once it fully dries.

Small, seasonal gaps are normal and usually don't need repair. Persistent cupping, crowning, or buckling are signs to get the floor checked before the damage spreads to more boards.

Why does gapping seem worse in some rooms than others? Rooms with less consistent aircon use, more direct sun, or proximity to a kitchen or bathroom typically see more humidity swings, and therefore more visible movement, than a steadily air-conditioned bedroom.

Is it worth measuring humidity before assuming it's the cause? Yes — a simple hygrometer over a week or two can confirm whether swings are unusually large, which helps rule in or out humidity as the primary driver versus a subfloor or installation issue.
