What a fresh polish actually does

Varnish forms a protective film (or, with oils and waxes, a penetrating protective layer) over the wood, giving it real resistance to everyday scuffs, light abrasion, and surface wear that would otherwise reach bare timber directly. This is a genuine, meaningful improvement over an old, worn finish.

What it doesn't do is make the floor scratch-proof. Sharp or hard objects — furniture legs without pads, pet claws, high heels, dragged appliances — can still cut through even a fresh, high-quality finish, particularly with enough force or repeated contact in the same spot.
