How to Choose a Parquet Flooring Contractor

A cheap quote and a good quote can look identical on paper. Here's what to actually ask before hiring, so you're comparing the same thing across contractors.

Flooring quotes are notoriously hard to compare at face value — two numbers that look similar can represent very different scopes of work, materials, and warranty coverage. Asking the right questions upfront saves a lot of frustration later.

Here's a practical list of what to ask, and what actually separates a reliable contractor from a risky one.

Before You Commit

Questions worth asking every contractor

  • "Will you inspect the site before quoting?" A real on-site assessment, not a phone estimate, is the clearest sign a quote reflects your floor's actual condition.
  • "What's included in the price?" Confirm whether sanding, repairs, staining, and the final coat count are all bundled, or if any are separate add-ons.
  • "What brand and type of finish will be used?" Oil-based vs. water-based, and the specific product, affect both cost and durability.
  • "Is there a workmanship warranty, and what does it cover?" A stated warranty period means little without knowing what specifically it covers.
  • "Can I see examples of past work?" Photos, reviews, or references give a sense of consistency, not just a single best-case example.
Comparing Quotes Fairly

What to line up side by side

FactorWhy It Matters
Site inspection before quotingConfirms pricing reflects real condition
Itemised scope (sanding, repair, coats)Prevents surprise add-on charges
Finish brand and type specifiedAffects both cost and durability
Warranty terms in writingProtects you if issues surface later
Realistic timeline givenOverly fast promises can signal corners cut
What Actually Predicts a Good Outcome
Site inspection before quoting
Strong signal
Clear, itemised written quote
Strong signal
Consistent reviews across job types
Good signal
Lowest price alone
Weak signal on its own

Illustrative — price matters, but on its own it's a poor predictor of workmanship quality compared to process transparency.

Watch For These

Red flags worth taking seriously

  • Quoting without seeing the floor — condition varies too much for an accurate remote estimate.
  • Vague scope — if a quote doesn't specify what's included, ask before signing, not after.
  • No warranty offered at all, or one that's verbal only rather than in writing.
  • Pressure to decide immediately — a legitimate contractor should be comfortable with you comparing quotes.

The lowest quote isn't automatically the riskiest, and the highest isn't automatically the safest — process transparency (inspection, itemised scope, written warranty) is the better predictor than price alone.
