Solid vs. Engineered Parquet: A Straight Comparison

They can look identical on the surface, but solid and engineered parquet are built completely differently — and that difference decides how your floor ages in Singapore's climate.

"Is my parquet solid or engineered?" is one of the most common questions we get on-site — and most homeowners genuinely don't know the answer until we check. It matters more than most people realise: the two constructions handle Singapore's humidity, sanding, and long-term wear in very different ways.

Here's what actually separates them, and how to figure out which one is under your feet.

The Core Difference

How solid and engineered parquet are built

Solid parquet blocks are timber all the way through — a single piece of hardwood, typically 15–22mm thick, glued or nailed directly to the subfloor. Because there's no layering, it moves with humidity as one solid piece, which is exactly why older HDB and landed home parquet can gap or cup after decades of humidity swings.

Engineered parquet has a thin real-wood veneer — usually 0.6mm to 6mm — bonded onto a plywood or high-density fibreboard (HDF) core, with the layers running in alternating directions. That cross-layered construction is specifically designed to resist the expansion and contraction that causes warping, which is why engineered parquet has become the more common choice in Singapore's consistently warm, humid climate.

Making The Call

Which one should you choose — or keep?

  • Already have solid parquet in good condition: keep it. Its refinishing life is the main advantage — don't trade it away for engineered unless humidity damage is severe.
  • Renovating a condo or higher-floor unit: engineered parquet's stability generally outweighs solid parquet's refinishing advantage, especially with regular air-conditioning use.
  • Not sure which you have: look at a damaged edge or a spot where a board has lifted — if you see plywood-style layers underneath, it's engineered; a uniform grain all the way through is solid.

Whichever type you have, the wear layer — not the surface finish — is what determines how many more times it can be sanded. We check this on-site before recommending any resand.

Quick questions homeowners ask

Does engineered parquet look cheaper than solid? Not necessarily — premium engineered parquet uses the same real hardwood veneers as solid parquet, just bonded to a stable core. Visually, the two can be indistinguishable once installed and finished.

Can I switch from solid to engineered during a renovation? Yes, though it usually means removing the existing solid parquet entirely rather than laying engineered over it, since floor heights and subfloor prep differ between the two.

Is engineered parquet actually cheaper long-term? Usually lower upfront, but if a thin-veneer engineered floor can't be resanded, you may face a full replacement sooner than a solid floor would need one — worth weighing against your ownership horizon.

Does the core material affect how the floor sounds underfoot? Slightly — plywood-core engineered parquet tends to have a marginally hollower sound than solid timber directly glued to a concrete subfloor, though a good underlay largely evens this out.

Is there a way to tell veneer thickness without damaging the floor? Not reliably without a proper inspection — we use a small, controlled test in an inconspicuous spot (like inside a wardrobe) to check remaining veneer depth before recommending a full sand elsewhere.
