Sealing gets mentioned constantly in marble care advice, but what it actually does — and doesn't do — is often unclear. Here's a straightforward explanation.
Sealing is one of the most misunderstood parts of marble maintenance. Here's what it actually does and how to know when it's due.
An impregnating sealer penetrates into the microscopic pores of the stone and creates a barrier that slows liquids from soaking in. It doesn't sit on top as a visible film the way a topical coating does — it works from within the stone, which is why a properly sealed floor still looks and feels natural rather than plasticky or glossy from the sealer alone.
What it buys you is time: a sealed floor gives you longer to notice and wipe up a spill before it penetrates deep enough to cause a stain. It does not prevent etching (a chemical surface reaction) and it does not make the floor scratch-proof, since both of those are physical or chemical processes the sealer sits below, not on top of.
A simple water-bead test tells you where you stand: pour a small amount of water on the marble and watch what happens. If it beads up and sits on the surface for a minute or more before slowly absorbing, the seal is still doing its job. If it soaks in within a few seconds, the sealer has worn through and it's time to reapply.
As a general guide, floors in moderate residential traffic typically need resealing every one to two years, while countertops in kitchens — which see more frequent liquid contact — often need it closer to annually. High-humidity areas like bathrooms can wear through sealant faster too.
Sealing is typically done as the final step after any polishing or honing work, once the surface is clean, dry, and free of polishing residue — sealing over a dirty or unfinished surface traps whatever is on top of the stone rather than protecting the stone itself. This is why it's usually bundled as part of a professional polishing job rather than something to DIY separately right after, and why it's worth confirming whether your quote includes it or treats it as a separate line item.
Sealers generally fall into impregnating (penetrating) and topical (surface coating) types. Impregnating sealers are the standard choice for natural stone floors since they preserve the stone's natural look and allow it to breathe. Topical coatings can offer a more dramatic shine but tend to wear unevenly with foot traffic and can be more difficult to strip and reapply evenly later, which is why most professional stone specialists default to impregnating products for residential floors.
Consumer sealant products exist and can offer some benefit, but professional-grade impregnating sealers generally penetrate more effectively and are applied as part of a properly cleaned and polished surface, which gives more consistent, longer-lasting results.
A good impregnating sealer shouldn't noticeably change the stone's appearance, since it works from within the pores rather than sitting on top as a visible coating. If a floor looks glossy or plasticky after sealing, that's usually a topical product rather than a true impregnating sealer.
This is worth discussing with whoever is doing the work, since porosity and colour can vary between marble types, and some sealers are better suited to certain stone characteristics than others.
